Coal Mining and Chronic Poverty in Appalachia Summary

For good or ill, Appalachia, poverty and coal mining are forever intertwined in the American mind. In the views of many Americans, the word “Appalachia” is a metaphor for chronic rural poverty in this country. In this chapter, we examine the nature of the chronic poverty that has plagued Appalachia for over a century, its primary causes and why Appalachia poverty has proven so resistant to attempt after attempt to alleviate it.
